Armando walked inside his mother's room but he saw her lying down in a fetal position of which concerned him. "Mom, are you feeling okay?" he asked, crawling on the bed and lying beside her.
"I'm fine baby, just chest pains. Have you eaten breakfast?" Isabel smiled, turning herself around to lie on her back. She winced but smiled nonetheless.
"No, how about we make pancakes?" Armando asked her before rising up and smiling.
Seeing Armando smile was enough for Isabel to regain the strength of her pain. Maybe making pancakes with her son would put her in a better mood and health?
Isabel happily rose up from the bed with a grunt and said, "Race you there!" she began running and she and her son shoved each other while going down the stairs. When Isabel made it down, she felt her heart beat faster, she touched it and stood still.
"Mom, mom, are you okay?" Armando said, rushing to her after turning to look back.
"I can't breathe... My heart... It hurts." Isabel short of breath struggled to speak.
Armando, alerted by this all, ran to the phone and picked up the phone, he dialed 911.
-
In the hospital, Isabel was taken into intensive care where many exams were made on her.
Armando had called Theodore who came rushing into the emergency room.
They waited patiently, talking about how they never had been spending enough time with her, the three of them together lately. As one always speaks of people who are dead, but Isabel wasn't dead, not really.
The doctor came in the room, he explained to Theodore and Armando that their mother had a malignant tumor in her heart. She had been having it for a few years. Her breathing short, her fragile heart and emotions that made her cry easily. Crying was never a good thing for her.
Theodore's eyes widened while Armando's eyes got teary.
"Is she going to be okay?" Theodore asked as he put a firm hand on Armando's shoulder for support.
"She'll need to go through surgery. We need to removed the cancer as soon as possible because it has been there for a long time. About three years old. How come she never spoke about this to you?" he asked them.
"She always said she was fine..." Theodore answered, "Can we see her?" he asked the doctor.
The doctor nodded and lead them to her room, where Isabel laid yet with a smile on her face.
"Hey babies... Why are you so sad?" she asked them, unaware of what was happening with her.
Armando wiped a tear away from his face, he didn't want to look sad in front of his mom.
"We're just happy to know that you're okay." Theodore said, not wanting her to know yet.
"Oh, I am... Just chest pains, you know, Teddy." she took his hand and smiled before looking to Armando who was on the opposite side holding her other hand.
"I'm sorry we didn't get to make the pancakes." she said with a frown.
"Mom, I don't care about pancakes." he sniffed, tightening his grip on her hand.
Theodore looked to Armando and sighed.
"Can I leave the hospital today?" Isabel wasn't really fond of hospitals because there were corpse in the basement.
"The doctor said that they're not done checking on you but we'll be here with you." Theodore winked as he pointed to her and poked her nose.
Isabel closed her eyes and smiled closed.
